Gulangyu 八卦楼 is located at No. 43, Guxin Road, Xiamen City and is a landmark building on Gulangyu Island. It was first built in 1907 and the dome was capped in 1930. The main building has a construction area of about 6,300 square meters, and its volume and height are the largest among the villas on Gulangyu Island. It is called 八卦楼 because of the octagonal shape of the roof that protrudes layer by layer and the eight-ridge red dome.
八卦楼 was invested and constructed by Lin Heshou of the Lin Benyuan family from Banqiao, Taiwan, and designed by John Abraham Otte, a Dutch-American. The building incorporates various architectural elements from both the East and the West. The dome imitates the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Palestine, and the 82 large columns refer to the Temple of Hera in ancient Greece. The internal passageways are in a cross shape, which is a commonly used technique in ancient Roman church architecture.
Since 2005, 八卦楼 has been opened as the Gulangyu Organ Museum. After its reopening in 2024, it has transformed from a single organ exhibition to a comprehensive scenic spot displaying architecture, history, music, etc.
