Master Potter Aoyama shows the rare White Tenmoku teabowl
In this 3D movie experimental archaeologist Master Sokei Aoyama shows his rare Shirotenmoku (White tenmoku) tea bowls. The Shirotenmoku were treasured by the samurai in medieaval Japan. A unique feature of these bowls is the cracks in the glaze, in which tea residue collects over years of use, making the cracks appear like a spider net inside the bowl. This is considered a key feature of their beauty. The bowls, of which only a handful of originals remain from mediaeval times, are the result of the master's reengineering efforts. Master Aoyama has spent decades trying to rediscover the production method of the Shirotenmoku, and was recently recognized as holder of a very important cultural asset by his home city, Tajimi, in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Tokugawa Art Museum in Nagoya has likewise recognized the Master by including his bowls in their collection.
