Mt. Cheiak, Birobong stone pagodas
[Information]
Based on my records, I've climbed Cheiaksan a total of nine times. Its main peak, Birobong, is famous for its three stone pagodas. They say Yong Chang-jung, who ran a bakery in Wonju, received a revelation in a dream and built them between 1962 and 1964. I remember being quite shocked one time when I reached Birobong only to find the pagodas had been struck by lightning and collapsed. I thought to myself, "It's not a movie, but lightning really can strike a stone pagoda and make it fall," and I found it quite amazing. I've been to most national parks, but I haven't seen any mountain top with such extensive stone pagodas. Perhaps only Maisan Tapsa could compare (though the atmosphere is completely different). On the way down, my mind was a jumble of thoughts: the Tower of Babel, lightning striking, human folly, the old man who moves mountains, and so on.
