Rooted in Confucian ideals of harmony, Tang court music also absorbed influences from Central Asia, India, and Persia via the Silk Road, reflecting the dynasty’s global reach. The court established the Da Yueshu (Imperial Music Bureau) to systematize musical theory, notation, and performance standards. Surviving scores, such as fragments of the Nishang Yuyi Qu ("Rainbow and Feather Garment Dance"), and historical records like the Jiu Tangshu ("Old Tang History"), reveal its sophistication. Today, Tang music is studied through archaeological artifacts (e.g., Dunhuang manuscripts), reconstructed performances, and its legacy in Japanese Tōgaku (Tang-era music preserved in Japan). UNESCO has recognized its significance as part of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage.
