One of the reasons why the village of Ruginoasa is famous in Romania is the traditional New Year battle called Malanca that was taking place on New Year's Day between "delenii" (those from the Hill) and "valenii (those from the Valley) where they would fight for supremacy and would hit each other with wooden clubs in a sort of sheep wool shield placed over their heads. It was also considered to be a depiction of the battle between good and evil.
Currently, the EU no longer allows this battle to be taking place as over time it often degenerated and it led to multiple serious injuries and 1 death.
However, the Malanca traditional dances ensemble puts on quite a show.
