The Amakusa Five Bridges in Kumamoto Prefecture, southwestern Japan, were completed in 1966 after overcoming major technical and financial challenges. At the time, Amakusa was separated from the mainland and known as an “isolated island on land,” with residents facing difficulties in everyday life. Although locals had long hoped for a bridge, the fast currents and deep straits made construction seem unrealistic.
With strong community support and national backing, advanced engineering methods were adopted. The largest bridge, Tenmon Bridge, was built in an area with powerful tidal currents, requiring dangerous underwater work and the use of large crane ships. Transporting materials was also difficult, and crews worked day and night amid changing weather.
Ultimately, the five bridges connected Amakusa to mainland Kyushu, transforming local life and the economy. Fulfilling a long-held dream, they continue to stand as a symbol of hope for the region.
