Join me for a walk around Wawel Hill, one of the most important historic sites in Poland. For centuries, Wawel was the residence of Polish kings and a powerful symbol of the Polish state. Today, the castle and cathedral form one of Kraków’s most impressive historic complexes.

According to a famous Kraków legend, a terrifying dragon once lived in a cave beneath Wawel Hill. The creature was supposedly defeated by Prince Krak, the legendary founder of Kraków. The cave, known as the Dragon’s Den, can still be visited today.

Another fascinating fact is that Wawel Hill has been an important centre of power since the early Middle Ages. By the 9th century it was already a major fortified settlement, and in 1320, King Władysław the Short was crowned in Wawel Cathedral.

The castle was later transformed during the Renaissance. Italian architects and artists created the beautiful arcaded courtyard, making Wawel one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Europe.

Today, Wawel is part of the Historic Centre of Kraków UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its exceptional collection of monuments and its importance to European history.
