Stops 6 and 7: The Lay Dam Formation

The Talladega Group includes the Lay Dam Formation and the Cheaha Quartzite (member of the Lay Dam Fm). These rocks record a Devonian through Mississippian sedimentation in a basin that would have been located between orogenic highlands to our southeast in the Eastern Blue Ridge and uplifted blocks of Cambrian-Ordovician rocks in the Valley and Ridge to the northwest between the Talladega-Cartersville fault and the Pell City fault. PUtting field observations and geothermochronology together requires uplifts separated by a basin. Could these uplifts be related to the preeixsting basement structures?
