The performance was filmed on a B-stage in front of an invited audience that included members of notable punk and new wave bands such as The Pretenders, Generation X, The Rich Kids, and the Sex Pistols. In late 2019, this historic footage was remastered and released in 4K resolution, garnering significant praise for its visual clarity which makes the 1978 performance appear remarkably modern.
This specific performance captures the band during a pivotal era, featuring the classic lineup with Keith Moon on drums, Pete Townshend on guitar, Roger Daltrey on vocals, and John Entwistle on bass. The song itself, originally released in 1971 on the album Who's Next, is renowned for its pioneering use of synthesizers. The repeating ostinato intro was created by Pete Townshend using a Lowrey Berkshire Deluxe TBO-1 organ with a marimba repeat feature, inspired by minimalist composer Terry Riley and the spiritual master Meher Baba (whose names form the title "Baba O'Riley").
