The Matsudo-juku Sakagawa Lantern Lighting Festival traces its roots to the Sukumo-zuka Kannon fair at Shōryū-ji Temple in Matsudo, originally linked to the “Shoman-rokusen-nichi” observance and the historic corn market held since the Edo period. From 2006 onward, lantern-floating and other ceremonial events were added, shaping the festival as it is celebrated today. The two-day event attracts roughly 25,000 visitors each year and has become a beloved summer tradition in the community.

The festival’s centerpiece is the toro-nagashi (lantern-floating) ceremony: about 1,300 lanterns, inscribed with prayers, wishes, and drawings, are launched from a temporary pier set up near the Oyama sluice (just upstream of the Koyama floodgate) and drift down the Sakagawa River. As the lanterns line the water, their glowing procession creates a contemplative atmosphere—honoring memories, making wishes, and offering a moving visual of collective devotion. Combined with local stalls and longstanding customs, the event blends historical roots with living community ritual.
