On May 5, 1622, the Date clan, which was on the Tokugawa side, gathered at Domyoujiguchi and set up camp at Katayama. In the battle that began before dawn on the following day, the 6th, the Katakura clan led by Shigenaga repelled the invading Goto Matabei clan of the Osaka side (Toyotomi side). They took the head of Usuda Hayatomasa, who had helped Goto, and also killed Goto Matabei with a gun, and fought a fierce battle with the Sanada clan, the strongest of the Osaka side.
On this day, the Katakura clan took over 90 heads, and on the following day, the 7th, they fought the Osaka side and took over 60 heads. Due to this military feat, Shigenaga was nicknamed Onikojuro, and the Katakura and Date clans were recognized as the most powerful men in Japan.
Thus, Osaka Castle fell. Sanada Yukimura decided to keep his clan alive, and entrusted his daughter to the enemy Katakura Shigenaga. Katakura Shigenaga hid this from Tokugawa, and the two remained married for 58 years.
