Stop 4: Choccolocco Mountain overview of the Alabama Valley and Ridge

From the Chimney Peak Fire Tower overlook you can see across the entire Alabama Valley and Ridge. The ridges on the horizon contain Cambrian through Pennsylvanian strata and represent a basin that was actively receiving sediment until the early part of the Alleghanian orogeny. The rocks along Choccolocco Mountain were uplifted at least ~50 million years earlier and may represent a previously unrecognized fold and thrust belt that began in the late Devonian.
