In 1856, Albertsbahn AG built the so-called Hänichener Steinkohlenzweigbahn to transport the hard coal mined in the shafts south of Dresden.
Due to the route (several bends, large gradients, tight curves), this standard gauge railway line is considered the oldest mountain railway in Germany and, after the Semmering Railway in Austria, the second oldest mountain railway in Europe. This is why the railway line was given the nickname Saxon Semmering Railway®. Another nickname is Windberg Railway, in reference to the highest elevation near Freital.
Public passenger and freight transport began on the line in 1907. From 1908, Possendorf was the terminus.
