Where Father Rhine meets Mother Moselle.
The Koblenz cable car, also known as the Buga cable car or Rhine cable car, is an aerial cable car over the Rhine in Koblenz. It was built as an attraction and environmentally friendly transport link for the 2011 Federal Horticultural Show. Since June 2010, the cable car has connected the Rhine facilities near St. Kastor's Basilica with the plateau in front of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. It is Germany's first tricable gondola lift and, with a transport capacity of 7,600 passengers per hour (3,800 passengers per hour and direction), has the highest capacity in Germany[1]. Its construction costs amounted to around twelve million euros. Following approval from UNESCO, the cable car can be operated until the end of its technically longest possible service life in 2026. The responsible operator is Skyglide Event Deutschland GmbH from Lindau (Lake Constance), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the manufacturer Doppelmayr, for whom the Koblenz cable car serves as a demonstration installation.
