Kelemantia Roman Camp
Kelemantia (also called the Kelemantia Roman Camp) is an important archaeological site near the village of Iža, about 7 km from Komárno. Here are the key facts: 🏛️ Origin: The Roman military camp was built in the 2nd century during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, during the Marcomannic Wars. 🛡️ Purpose: It was part of the defensive system of the Roman frontier known as the Danubian Limes. 🧱 Size: The camp had an almost square layout measuring approximately 172 × 172 meters, covering more than 3 hectares. 🌍 UNESCO: Since 2021, it has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of “Frontiers of the Roman Empire – The Danube Limes.” What you can see there today: preserved foundations of the fortifications, the northern gate, remains of towers and barracks, informational panels about the site’s history. Visiting information: admission is free and open year-round, it is also a good destination for a short walking or cycling trip along the Danube.
