The Alvord Desert is one of Oregon’s most surreal landscapes, a vast dry lakebed beneath the towering face of Steens Mountain. In this immersive aerial journey, we skim just feet above the ancient playa, discover a hidden cold spring oasis, and explore relics left behind by those who once crossed this remote basin.
Thousands of years ago, this empty expanse was covered by prehistoric Lake Alvord. As the lake slowly evaporated, it left behind the remarkably flat playa seen today. The bright surface is made of fine silt and clay deposited over countless centuries, creating one of the smoothest natural landscapes in North America.
Long before European explorers arrived, the Northern Paiute people lived throughout the Alvord Basin, relying on seasonal wetlands, springs, fish, waterfowl, and native plants. The springs that still emerge around the desert remain vital sources of freshwater for wildlife and travelers alike.
Steens Mountain rises nearly a mile above the desert floor and is one of the largest fault-block mountains in North America. Over millions of years, movement along the Steens Fault lifted the mountain while the valley below subsided, creating the dramatic contrast between towering cliffs and the perfectly level playa.
If you enjoy immersive flights over remote landscapes, consider subscribing for more adventures across Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.
